Mini-Review:

Marcy and friends are back for the second installment of the Embroidery Mystery series.   It started as a typical day for Marcy.  As soon as she opened the door to her shop, the Seven-Year Stitch, her first customer arrived.  The woman asks Marcy for help with finding "ivy".  She shows Marcy a family heirloom⎯an embroidery sampler⎯which Marcy finds breathtaking.  Minutes later, the woman collapses on the floor and dies.  Grief stricken, Marcy decides to  pursue "ivy" to grant the woman's last wish.

As Marcy gets closer to finding the mysterious ivy, she realizes the woman's death may not have been due to natural causes.  Looks like someone wanted her dead and Marcy is next on the killer's list.

It's About: It's Christmas and Sophie Winston is spending the holiday with her family. When she arrives at her brother George's house, she learns a thief has stolen all their presents from under the tree. As it turns out, the neighbors' presents were also stolen. Sophie finds herself involved in another case as she tries to track down the thief and salvage Christmas.

Thoughts: The Domestic Diva is one of my favorite cozy series. Like previous novels, the author introduces the readers to many characters, but thankfully a list of characters is noted at the beginning of the book in case one needs a reminder. They mystery moves quickly and the author throws in several twists to hide the killer's identity until the end of the novel. I'm looking forward to reading the fifth book in the series, The Diva Haunts the House.

Recommended to readers if:

• you live in, near or have visited Old Town Alexandria, VA
• you love a mystery with lots of characters
• you enjoy an amateur sleuth who is logical and isn't afraid to get her hands dirty when investigating a case

Mini-Review: Domestic Diva Cozy Series

I began reading the Domestic Diva Mystery Series in 2010. I read rave reviews about The Diva Runs out of Thyme, first of the series, so I had to see for myself if it lived up to its hype. I'm happy to say it did! I'm always on the hunt for a new cozy series and it just so happens this series is set in Old Town Alexandria, not too far from me. (If you're interested, my review can be read here.)

Book 2

Title:  The Diva Takes the Cake

Book 3

Title:  The Diva Paints the Town

Sophie finds herself at odds with her rival Natasha.  Sophie's neighbor has died and Natasha is renovating his home for a house tour.  When Sophie is assigned a room, the battle is on between the two women.  When a dead body is found inside the home, Sophie finds herself involved in another murder investigation.



Davis has created a host of characters the reader will come to love.  The mysteries are light and will keep you guessing until the last page.  If you are looking for a new cozy series, I suggest you give the Domestic Diva Mystery series a try.  You will not be disappointed.

Review: Due or Die by Jenn McKinlay

Library Lover's Mystery Series, Book 2

It's election time for the Friends of the Library.  The current president, Bill Sint is angry with Carrie Rushton for running against him.  When Carrie wins the election, not all members are thrilled.

Now that she's President-Elect, Carrie is busier than ever.  Unfortunately her husband Markus is of no help.  When Markus is found murdered inside their home, Carrie becomes the police's number one suspect.

Due or Die is the second installment in the new Library Lover's Mystery series.  Although I am one to read a series in order, I did not find it necessary to read the first book, Books Can Be Deceiving.  The author briefly wrote about events from that book, however she did not reveal spoilers and the reader is able to follow the current storyline.

Lindsey Norris once again takes center stage in the murder investigation.  She knows Carrie would not murder her husband and is persistent to solve the crime.  She enlists the help of Sully, Nancy, Beth and the other Crafternoon Club members.  The clock is ticking as Carrie's arrest is inevitable.

The romance between Lindsey and Sully has blossomed.  There's no denying these two have feelings for each other and both are finally ready to take the next step.  Like the previous book, the romance did not overshadow the mystery.  I like both Sully and Lindsey and feel the pace of their relationship is real.

I've come to enjoy the Library Lover's Mystery series and look forward to the third book, Book, Line, and Sinker (there is a preview provided in Due or Die).  Cozy fans will not want to miss this series.

Review: Books Can Be Deceiving

Books Can Be Deceiving by Jenn McKinlay
Library Lover's Mystery Series, Book 1

It's About:  Lindsey Norris is the newest resident of Briar Creek.  She is the director of the Briar Creek Public Library.  After experiencing several personal setbacks, Lindsey finally believes she has found her new home.

When Sydney Carlisle, a hot-shot New York editor, comes to town for a quiet getaway, Beth Stanley, Lindsey's best friend, is excited to meet her.  Beth has aspirations of becoming a published children's author.  Her boyfriend, Rick, considers her work to amateurish and she doesn't think she has a chance to be published.

When Rick is found murdered, Beth is the police's number one suspect.  Can Lindsey find the killer's identity before Beth is arrested?

Thoughts:  First, how cute is this cover?  The library is so inviting; I just want to go inside and browse the shelves!  Which is the main reason I was looking forward to starting this series.  A cozy series that takes place in the library!  As I library lover, this is right up my alley.

In Books Can Be Deceiving, McKinlay takes her time setting up the murder.  This doesn't mean it's a slow-moving plot.  Quite the opposite.  I actually preferred this because it allowed me to get to know the characters.  The scenes are written so vividly, I had no problem picturing the library, which in a way is another character in the book.

Lindsey, Beth and the supporting characters make this cozy a delightful read.  There's a hint of romance for Lindsey, which I am glad the author didn't rush into in the first book.  The mystery is light, with several twists as Lindsey finds each clue that eventually leads her to the killer's identity.

Lasting impression:  Books Can Be Deceiving is book and library lover's wish for a cozy series.  It's off to a good start and I cannot wait to read the second book, Due or Die.  Luckily for me I have a copy sitting on my bookshelves.

Review: The Look of Love

It's About: When Piper is offered an all-expense paid trip to Los Angeles to bake a wedding cake for Jillian Abernathy, she's a bit hesitant. After spending New Year's Eve with Jack, the man she's seeing, she thinks it's best to leave Jersey for awhile to think about where their relationship is going.

Her father is not sold on the idea of her going. Jillian's housekeeper was recently attacked⎯an attack meant for Jillian. He warns Piper to be careful and not to get involved with the investigation. Upon Piper's arrival to the elite spa where Jillian is the head director, a murder has just taken place. Soon Piper finds herself in the middle of trying to solve the crime.

My Thoughts: Last year I was introduced to Piper in book one, To Have and To Kill. Having enjoyed it, I immediately accepted the pitch to review The Look of Love. The Look of Love picks up where To Have and To Kill left off. We find Piper still living at home and helping her mother in her bakery. Piper continues to pursue her acting career and is casually dating Jack. Jack, however, wants a committed relationship. Piper isn't sure about her feelings for him nor is she ready for anything serious. Jillian's offer to travel to LA comes at the right time. She'll go to auditions, she'll create and bake Jillian's wedding cake and she'll take time to think about what she wants with Jack. Little does Piper know, once she lands, she'll find herself deep in a murder investigation.

Piper is a likeable character and ideal for an amateur sleuth. She doesn't rush into anything impulsively, but instead is cautious and tries to see the big picture.  Each step she takes leads her in the right direction to finding the killer's identity.  She's compassionate and genuinely wants to help Jillian move on from the tragic events.

I figured out the killer's identity early on.  It didn't prevent me from enjoying the mystery.  I wanted to see how the characters would react when they learned the killer's identity and motive behind the attack.  The Look of Love is a quick weekend read.  Grab your favorite throw, curl up on your couch or reading chair and settle in for a light, cozy mystery.

The Cupcake Bakery Mystery series is one that has been on my "new series list to read" since I first saw the cover of Sprinkle with Murder. These covers are so cute! I knew I had to read the books. When I discovered my library owned the ebooks, I immediately downloaded all three and read them over the holidays.

Although I figured out the killer early on in book one, I still wanted to read more about Mel, Angie and Tate. There is a hint of romance between the two of three characters, that I can't help but to wonder if they end up together how it will impact the friendship and course of the series. Having said that, I'm anxiously waiting for Red Velvet Revenge (book 4) to be released this summer.

Recommended to readers if:

To Abby's surprise he has killed numerous people and he confirms she is correct about this. Abby soon realizes the bride is the daughter of a powerful mob boss.

Meanwhile Milo, Dutch's former partner, is working a case involving a serial rapist and solicits Abby's help. Things become complicated when the rapist attacks someone close to Abby. Unfortunately Abby has no choice but to withhold information from the police.

The Psychic Eye Mystery series is quickly becoming a favorite. Abby is a no-nonsense type of girl and makes a great amateur sleuth. Like the previous book, Better Read Than Dead is a quick read with lots of twists and turns. Laurie keeps the storyline moving so the reader is never bored. I definitely will continue reading this series.

Abby Cooper is not the typical girl next door. As hard as she tried to be "normal" and fit in, the cards (no pun intended!) weren't lined up for her. You see, Abby is a psychic intuitive. She is able to tell the future. Abby makes a pretty good living doing this as evident by her full calendar.

On the day she gets a cancellation, Allison Pierce shows up to her office and asks Abby to see her. During her reading, Abby warns Allison about a man with dark hair. He has something to do with a loss she recently suffered and may be the reason a woman close to Allison has left. Days later Allison calls Abby again to schedule another appointment, however Abby quickly dismisses her stating it is her policy to only meet with clients once every six months. Abby abruptly disconnects the call, but cannot shake the weird feeling she has surrounding Allison.

When Allison is found brutally murdered in her home, Abby feels somewhat responsible. If only she took the time to listen to Allison and answer her questions, then maybe Allison would still be alive. Abby becomes involved with the investigation to find Allison's killer and is marked as the killer's next victim.

I've been wanting to read Laurie's Psychic Eye Mystery series for awhile now. I'm just sorry I didn't start it sooner. Abby is a likeable main character and is a competent amateur sleuth. She doesn't become overly involved with solving the mystery and doesn't appear to know it all. The tension between Dutch, the detective on the case, and Abby is perfect and doesn't overpower the mystery. It did, however, leave me wondering what's in store for these two in future books.

Abby Cooper, Psychic Eye is a great start to this long-lasting series (book nine was released in July). I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the series. Recommended.

When someone close to her is hauled into the police station for questioning, Casey takes it upon herself to learn more about the victim and why she was killed. You see, Casey is a bit of a mystery buff and always has a mystery book with her. Channeling her inner Miss Marple, Casey is able to follow the clues to solve the mystery.

Flowerbed of State is the first book in the brand new White House Gardener Mystery series. It centers around Casey Calhoun as she transitions from South Carolina to the District working for the White House. She's a likable and competent sleuth, always managing to stay one step ahead of the Secret Service.

I figured out the killer early in the story, however it did not prevent me from enjoying Flowerbed of State. St James provides a host of secondary characters that will keep the reader engaged, entertained, and interested in learning more about them. I'm looking forward to reading book two in the series. Cozy fans will enjoy this newest addition to the genre. Recommended.

When Daphne arrives at Yodel's home with her third cake, she unexpectedly finds herself involved in a murder investigation.

Rumor has it that Yodel was poisoned. And because Daphne found her dead, it is assumed that an ingredient in one of Daphne's cakes may have poisoned her. To prove her innocence and keep her business from being ruined before it even begins, Daphne must find Yodel's killer.

Murder Takes the Cake is the first book in this cozy series. Although the story centers around Daphne's attempt to rebuild her life, the reader is also introduced to a host of secondary characters. Fans of cozy mysteries will enjoy this light, quick read. Murder Takes the Cake is a good start to a promising series. Recommended.

Piper Donovan is down on her luck. She was recently written out of her soap opera, A Little Rain Must Fall. Not having any callbacks from her auditions, Piper is forced to give up her Manhattan apartment. She returns home to Jersey to live with her parents. Her father is a former cop and her mother owns The Icing on the Cupcake bakery. It's there that Piper spends most of her days when she's not auditioning.

Piper stayed in touch with the leading actress from A Little Rain Must Fall, Glenna Brooks. When the two friends meet for lunch, Glenna announces she's getting married on Christmas Eve and asks Piper if her mother would be so kind to make her wedding cake. Piper immediately accepts on her mother's behalf. It's also during this lunch that Glenna discloses she has received a disturbing letter (anonymously written) about her upcoming nuptials. Piper warns Glenna to be careful.

Days following their lunch, someone close to Glenna is mysteriously murdered. All clues lead back to this letter. And it's not until another person from the soap is left for dead that Piper begins to realize someone is determined to not see Glenna walk down the aisle and will kill anyone that is in the way.

To Have and To Kill is the first book in Clark's new Wedding Cake Mystery series. I've read and thoroughly enjoyed her previous Key News series, so I was looking forward to reading this mystery. As usual, Clark did not disappoint. She has created a likable and intelligent amateur sleuth in Piper. There's a hint of a love interest for Piper, but it doesn't overshadow the mystery. Piper's parents round out the storyline as her mother is battling personal issues that may threatened her livelihood.

Overall I really enjoyed To Have and To Kill. It's a light, cozy mystery that is perfect reading for a lazy afternoon. I'm looking forward to reading future mysteries starring Piper.

Diva Las Vegas - Eileen Davidson

Sentence summary: Alex and her detective boyfriend Jakes head to Vegas to solve a murder.

My review: It's Halloween and Alex and her best friend George are invited to the Playboy Mansion. Shana, an acquaintance of Alex and former Playmate, asks Alex to the party because she has something important to discuss with her. Before the night is over, Shana is found dead in the haunted house.

Alex's boyfriend, detective Frank Jakes, is assigned to the case. Because Alex and George were the ones to discover Shana's body, Jakes agrees to allow Alex to assist on the case. Alex begins questioning her soap opera cast mates as Shana's ex-husband is also a star on the show. Her quick sleuthing leads them to Vegas.

Alex's soap is attending Daytime in the Desert, a convention held in Vegas for the fans. While Alex is attending the festivities, Jakes is discovering Shana's murder may be linked to another local girl's death. Alex and Jakes concluded her death may have something to do with her recent plastic surgery and all signs point to the doctor.

Lasting impression: I really like this series and hope it continues. The story ended on a cliffhanger for Alex and I'm curious to know what happens next.

Reason for reading: Read the first two in the series and liked them both.

Recommend: Yes. Definitely read the books in order.

The Quick and the Thread ~ Amanda Lee

Sentence summary: The morning after her open house, Marcy discovers the previous store tenant dead in her storeroom.

My review: The Quick and the Thread is the first book of An Embroidery Mystery series. Marcy Singer leaves San Francisco for Tallulah Falls, Oregon to pursue her dream of owning her own embroidery shop The Seven Year-Stitch. Her best friend and former college roommate, Sadie and her husband Blake, also reside there. The couple owns MacKenzies' Mochas, which is conveniently located next door to Marcy's shop.

The night of her open house, former tenant Tim Enright crashes the party and is determined to speak with Marcy privately. Turned off by his odd behavior (and assumption he's intoxicated), Marcy keeps herself at arm's length. Later after everyone has left for the evening, Marcy, Sadie, Blake and Todd (the man that Sadie is trying to fix her up with) are cleaning up when they hear a strange noise in the back. Blake and Todd make light of it and joke that it's only a bear. The next morning Marcy discovers Enright's body.

Before his death, Enright scratches a message on the wall that's a clue to his murder. Marcy is suddenly being looked at as a suspect and decides she needs learn the meaning behind the message to clear her name. She begins speaking to the local residents and as a result another person is killed.

Characters: Marcy represents a good amateur sleuth. She's very likable and doesn't come across as gullible or simpleminded. At times I did think she disclosed too much information to random people, but in the end she realized her mistake.

Sadie is Marcy's best friend, yet she was pushy and quick to judge Marcy. I never really warmed up to her. Blake and Todd were often present with the two women and I thought they made a good foursome. It was hard to tell exactly how Marcy felt about Todd. Especially with Detective Ted Nash in the picture. Perhaps a love triangle will evolve in later books? Needless to say, the hint of romance did not detour away from the murder investigation.

Marcy offers stitching classes to the residents and it's through these classes that the reader is introduced to the secondary characters. Last of all, there's Angus, Marcy's Irish wolfhound.

Lasting impression: The Quick and the Thread is a solid start to what I hope will be a long lasting series. Book two, Stitch Me Deadly, will be released in February 2011.

Reason for reading: I’m always looking for a new cozy mystery series.

Recommend?: Yes. Fans of cozy mysteries will welcome this series to the genre.

A Killer Plot - Ellery Adams

A Killer Plot is the first in a brand new cozy series by Ellery Adams. Olivia Limoges is the main character with a haunting past. She returns to her hometown a wealthy woman and is often the center of the town's gossip. She comes across as aloof and uncaring. She's still wounded from her childhood and is learning how to break down her walls.

She's given the chance to join the Bayside Book Writers, a group of hopeful writers who meet regularly to critique their rough drafts, where she meets new friends. The offer comes from Camden Ford, who is currently writing a book about the high-powered Talbot family. When Camden is killed, Olivia feels a sense of loss for her new friend and takes it upon herself to find his killer.

A Killer Plot is a fresh addition to the cozy genre. Olivia is a complex main character, while the secondary characters assist with moving her forward from the isolation she feels as a result of her past. There's a hint of a love interest for her, but it doesn't deflect from the mystery. Adams does a fantastic job with character development and description of Oyster Bay, that the reader can easily visualize each scene while reading. Some may question Olivia's relationship with her poodle Havilland and how she communicates with him. It's through this relationship that Olivia is the most vulnerable and is seen with emotion.

The storyline moves at a steady pace and I never felt it was rushed. I didn't solve the mystery and was quite surprised at the killer's identity and the motives for the killings. If you're a cozy fan and looking for a new series, I highly recommend A Killer Plot. The second book, A Deadly Cliche will be released in March 2011.

And when the police find her name and photo inside the victim's car, they think she has some explaining to do. Sophie will have to set her trussing aside to solve the murder or she'll be serving up prison grub—and that definitely wouldn't be a good thing.

My thoughts:
The Diva Runs Out of Thyme is book one of the Domestic Diva Mystery series. Sophie Winston is down-to-earth and very likable. She's recently divorced from Mars, who is now dating her high school rival Natasha. The story opens with Sophie preparing Thanksgiving dinner. She makes a last minute run to the store to purchase a few items, when a man approaches her to ask if she wants to adopt a kitten. Sophie has dog and declines, but remains concerned about the welfare of the kitten. When she finishes shopping, she decides to find the man to say she will take the kitten to her friend who will help find the kitten a good home. Sophie discovers the man dead instead.

Bodies start to pile up when Sophie finds another dead body at the Stupendous Stuffing Shakedown. The main witness for two deadly crimes, make Sophie the prime suspect in both murders. Sophie has to act quickly to prove her innocence and decides to do some amateur sleuthing and solicits the help of her best friend (and neighbor) Nina.

Finding the killer isn't as easy as Sophie thinks. She's also distracted by the neighborhood's Peeping Tom and her's sister's upcoming wedding. Hannah recently introduced Craig to the family and Sophie thinks he's, well, a bit. . .off! What exactly is he hiding? And how well does Hannah know him?

As Sophie gets more and more involved in solving the crimes, she thinks Natasha may not be so innocent. Is Natasha the killer? And why is someone following her? Sophie is determined to find out and host her family's Thanksgiving dinner.

The Diva Runs Out of Thyme is a great start to what appears to be a promising new series.

Finger Lickin' Fifteen by Janet Evanovich

Um... well, let's see. Ok. Yeah... I just am at a loss for words with this book. For a few days now, I've been thinking about this review. What exactly do I say?

Here goes...

My summary:
Stephanie Plum is back along with Lula, Connie, Morelli, Ranger and Grandma Mazur. Lula witnesses the murder of Stanley Chipotle, a celebrity chef. While the killers chase Lula, Stephanie is trying to track down her skips and help Ranger with his security firm.

My review:
Finger Lickin' Fifteen is based on the same formula as the previous three of four books: Stephanie still can't catch her skips without Ranger's help (I mean how many times can people jump out the bathroom window before she realizes not to leave them alone?), the on-again, off-again relationship with Joe Morelli (they're off in this installment), Lula farting, Stephanie and Lula eating (a lot), Stephanie's cars blow up and Ranger supplies her with a Porsche (followed by another Porsche!), Grandma packin' her gun in her purse, and dinners at her parents' home.

The lack of character growth in this series continues. Why isn't Stephanie allowed to become a skilled bounty hunter? Why does she always need Joe or Ranger to come to the rescue? The love triangle between Stephanie, Joe and Ranger has gotten old. At this point, I no longer care who she ends up with, but can she just pick one of them?!?

The Stephanie Plum series certainly isn't serious reading. I do remember a time when I enjoyed reading about Stephanie's mishaps because they were laugh-out loud funny! Unfortunately, I no longer find her funny.

I'm not sure about this series anymore. There was a time Stephanie Plum was one of my favorite series. I would immediately sign-up for the wait list at the library and read it each book in one sitting. Now, it's not as crucial for me to read the latest Stephanie Plum book shortly after its release. It has gotten to where I only read the books to keep up with the series. But Finger Lickin' Fifteen, just may be my last Stephanie Plum book.

Quick Study - Maggie Barbieri

Quick Study is the third book in the Murder 101 Mystery Series featuring professor Alison Bergeron. While participating in community service (as a result of an incident that occurred in Extracurricular Activities, book two), Alison befriends Hernan and his family. Needing painting done in her home, Alison hires Hernan and his nephew Jose. When Jose goes missing, Hernan reluctantly seeks Alison's help.

Little does Alison know her police detective boyfriend, Crawford, has been assigned to a John Doe case. A man's body was found floating in the river. Convinced it's Jose, Alison begins to investigate on her own. As she delves deeper into Jose's disappearance she uncovers a world of illegal workers and their employers. Can Alison solve the mystery before the killer stops her?

As much as I enjoy this series, I have to say Quick Study fell flat for me. The back and forth between Alison and Crawford's relationship, the convenient run-ins Alison has with Jack, the man she dated while on she and Crawford were on a break, and the slow-moving plot, stalled my interest. I found myself skimming pages just to learn the killer's identity. Towards the end, my interest started to peak just a bit when Max, Alison's best friend, makes a surprising confession.

Despite my opinion about this book, other readers feel differently as it currently has a 4.5 star rating on Amazon.com. Hopefully my excitement for this series returns again with book four, Final Exam.

My synopsis:

Can the two of them work together to solve the mystery before another dog is taken?

My review:
Ellie Engleman has a new job. Her dream job. She's a dog walker. Ellie also discovered she can hear their thoughts as well as they can hear hers. Imagine her surprise when she learns the dog she recently adopted has been taken over by her former dog's spirit.

As Ellie is trying to build her clientele, she has to also deal with two conniving dog walkers who will do anything to protect their turf. You see, being a dog walker is serious business in NYC, especially on the Upper East Side. Ellie doesn't allow their threats to scare her. When she finds one of her clients dead and his prized dog missing, Ellie knows what she must do: FIND THE DOG!

I'm not sure where I first heard of Hounding the Pavement. Perhaps during a weekly visit to a book store or maybe someone recommended it to me. Being an animal lover myself (and always on the hunt for a new series), I decided to go ahead and buy it. The beginning of the book was quick. I found myself instantly drawn into the story wondering how the missing dog would tie into his owner's death.

Somewhere in the middle, I just lost interest. Several times I thought about putting down the book, but decided to keep reading as I wanted to know what happened to the dog?!? (Oh, yeah and who killed his owner - I know it's an afterthought!) I can't say I was surprised by the ending. The reader can easily figure it out. Even though the mystery was light, I did enjoy the budding relationship between Ellie and Sam.

Despite having mixed thoughts about Hounding the Pavement, I plan to read book two of the series, Heir of the Dog.

Dial Emmy for Murder by Eileen Davidson

Readers were first introduced to Alexis Peterson in Daytime in Death, book one of A Soap Opera Mystery series. Alex is the number one suspect in the murder investigation of a head writer on The Yearning Tide. Determined to clear her name, she begins her own investigation and finds she's quite good at being an amateur sleuth.

In Dial Emmy for Murder, Alex has left her former soap, The Yearning Tide, and is now a cast member of The Bare and the Brazen. It's the night of the Daytime Emmy Awards and Alex is one of the presenters. When her co-star and fellow presenter, Jackson Masters, doesn't show, Alex is forced to present the award herself. Little does she know, she's about to walk into another murder investigation.

Dial Emmy for Murder is a light, cozy mystery. The killer is evident as soon as he/she is introduced in the storyline, however this book is an enjoyable read. I have to admit, I was more interested in the blooming relationship between Alex and Detective Jakes than the murder investigation. There's also a sub-plot regarding Alex and her estranged husband. He embezzled money from his clients and stole Alex's retirement fund. Now he's back and is demanding to see their daughter.

If you're looking for a entertaining story, with a light mystery thrown in, then Dial Emmy for Murder is the answer. Book three of the series is in the works. Can't wait? There's a sneak peek included in Dial Emmy for Murder.
