Sunday Salon - Distracted

The Sunday Salon.com

For a few days now, I've been feeling somewhat guilty about my reading.  I made a list of reading goals to accomplish this year and so far, I'm not even close to reaching them.  This year has been different for me.  I was introduced to reading challenges and from there, my reading just went to another level.  My TBR list has almost doubled in size, I've discovered new authors, I've read more books so far this year than in previous years, I've returned to reading young adult fiction and found myself reading books outside my comfort zone.  Actually, it hasn't been all that bad.

Having said that, my personal reading goals have taken a serious beaten.  I've been so distracted and impulsive with my reading this year and now it's time for me to focus on my goals again.  I have so many unread books sitting on my bookshelf (and for some reason, I still continue to purchase more) that I wanted to read this year.  After discovering Jodi Picoult last year, I wanted to read her entire collection (I have 7 more).  I also wanted to get my TBR list down to a manageable number and start reading at least three new series that I've always wanted to read.

Well, the year isn't over yet and there's still time.  I just have to jump back in and start where I am.

  1. Goodness, I hear you! I joined 50/08 (50books.ning.com) and have only read 17 of the 50 books I pledged to read this year. Many tend to jump into reading challenge after reading challenge not realizing the amount of commitment they require. My suggestion is to chose one or two that you can combine your reading experience with.

And above all, have fun and enjoy your reading. It's good that you are reading out side your comfort level. There are just too many good books you would miss if you stuck to one genre. I used to be completely into historical romances (medieval and Scottish) but now I read suspense, paranormal and (though I've said I'd NEVER) chick lit.

As for buying books... well, I can't help you there. I do it too.

    Happy reading,
    Amber

  2. I've gotten distracted this year as well. For years all I've read are thrillers and historical epics, and then this year I rediscovered my love for romance, especially romantic suspense. I'm averaging about a book a day lately, but I'm really trying to get back to a good balance between them and some good literary fiction. Books like Bear Any Burden, a family epic and espionage thriller by Ellis Goodman really help because even though I have a hard time putting them down, I can't just barrel through it in one day like a can with a romance.

You do not need another book reco, oh overwhelmed and distracted one . . so I am not going to tell you that if you like Jodi P you might like another author from her publisher (me) and her critically acclaimed book (STANDING STILL) no I'm just going to say hi and not even mention the website (bykellysimmons.com)

  4. I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels this way.
